Q+A – Tarryn Light

1What made you fall in love with singing and musical theatre?
As a young child, I fell in love with the glitz and glam of the stars. My first love was Prince (I will never forget watching his concert on TV – it blew my mind). He was such a diva, and so dramatic and the way he dresses, and the GLITTER! My first musical I watched was Grease and Les Misérables. I recorded these from Live TV. I watched them over and over and over again, I would imitate every dance move and knew every song off by heart.
2Which famous musicians / actors / performers do you admire? Why?
Wow I have a few but I will narrow it down to a Top 3:

- Liza Minelli - She is one of the greatest Broadway stars of all time – she was so unique and not perfect, but she worked hard and made a major impact on theatre.

- Bernadette Peters - In her old age and still rocking broadway – She has had a great influence on my love of musical theatre.

- Lady Gaga - The most amazing artist, actress, singer all-rounder – I love how she does not limit herself to one art form and how she constantly re-invents herself.
3Who inspires you to do what you do?
My biggest inspiration is my son. I would not be the person I am today without him. He has made me want to become better!
4What is your favourite part of this line of work? What is your least favourite?
I love to perform, I love to entertain people, and I love that applause! When people enjoy themselves because of me – that is my favourite part! My least favourite thing about this line of work is when people want freebies and how they do not understand how much time, money and effort goes into preparing a performance.
5How does it feel when you’re on stage and everyone is watching you? What does it mean to you to be on stage?
When I am on stage I can escape. For that time I am on stage, the world stops. I can live in that moment and leave everything else at the door. It is probably the most amazing feeling in the world. The stage is my passion, it’s something I cannot live without.
6Do you get nervous before a performance? How do you handle the nerves?
I get extremely nervous, but if you are not nervous then you do not care about your performance. Performers strive for perfection! - They say the day you are not nervous, that drive for perfection and that passion fades.
7Do you teach music / singing / performance arts?
I direct shows, I have taught some acapella groups in both singing and performance. Teaching young kids and young adults before a show is very rewarding. To see an improvement in a performer after a show is even more rewarding!
8What advice would you have for someone wanting to follow in your footsteps?
I think the only advice I can give is to believe in yourself, and to invest in yourself (no matter what anyone says). You are the maker of your own reality!
9What is the dream? What’s next?
The dream is to open my own cabaret club - but I shall not reveal too much of that yet.
